MSI MAG A650BNL Review – It lost heart halfway through

MSI MAG A650BNL Features

The MSI MAG A650BNL is a 650W 80+ Bronze certified power supply unit designed for entry-level gaming and general-purpose PC builds. It offers features like DC to DC converter circuit design, 120mm silent fan, and flat cables for easy cable management. In this review we intend to thoroughly test the MSI MAG A650BNL power supply on the basis of ATX standard quality parameters as well as the 80+ Certification. One thing to note in this review is that due to the nature of consumer power available in Pakistan being at 230V, we’ll judge and review this power supply on the basis of 85,88,85 percent of efficiency rating at 20%, 50%, and 100% load respectively complying with 230V EU Non-Redundant standard.

MSI MAG A650BNL Testing & Review

We jump right into the testing, applying DC Loads on the 12V Rail alone in the increments of near-100W, table below represents our results.

Summary of Results

We can clearly see that upon loading just the 12V Rail alone, the PSU gave up its compliance with ATX standard completely at 50% load mark and failed to maintain regulation as well as Ripple across all the 3 rails. While the PSU failed with the Ripple on its 5V and 3.3V Rails at 42% load (that too on just 12V Rail alone), the regulation of 12V fell to the minimum set by the ATX standard. Moreover, we didn’t find the PSU compliant with 80+ Bronze efficiency rating either, even when the PSU clearly has 230V input range on its label it’s not the wide-range input PSU and hence is to be judged upon EU 230V Non-Redundant criteria for 80+ Certification. At best, we will put this PSU in 80+ White category efficiency-wise or absolutely won’t recommend this PSU at all based upon it failing to match the baseline ATX standard criteria.

Conclusion

Based on our findings, we will absolutely not recomend this PSU for loading circumstance above 200W of DC Load, and for that range, there are better and cheaper Power supplies available in 450-500W baseline range. Also, keeping our promise of delivering only quality with value-for-money products to our customers, MSI MAG A650BNL will not be available through our shop or any purchase channels. We recommend our readers and customers to not buy MSI MAG A650BNL rather opt for better quality power supplies such as Super Flower Zillion 650W in the same power bracket.
