Thermalright has recently entered the PSU market with its 80+ Bronze, Gold, Platinum and Titanium rated Power supplies focusing on delivering quality where its needed the most without breaking bank of the buyers. In this Thermalright TR-TB650S review, we aim to test and review the power supply on the ATX standard quality parameters as well as verify the 80+ certification. TR-TB650S is 80+ Bronze certified non-modular power supply by Thermalright.

Introducing the company

Thermalright is a well-established Taiwanese company specializing in the design and manufacturing of high-performance cooling solutions for computers. Founded in 2001, they have built a strong reputation for producing innovative and effective heat sinks, CPU coolers, and other cooling components.

Thermalright is known for its focus on engineering excellence and a commitment to providing high-quality products at competitive prices. They have a long history of developing cutting-edge cooling technologies, often pushing the boundaries of thermal performance.

While perhaps not as widely recognized as some larger brands, Thermalright enjoys a strong following among PC enthusiasts and overclockers who value performance and value. Their products are consistently praised for their cooling efficiency, build quality, and often unique design approaches.

PSU division

Thermalright is fairly new to the PSU market with its PSU OEM being Dongguan SANR Electronic Technology Co. LTD, Dongguan, China. This relatively new endeavor sees them entering the market with a focus on the higher end. Their initial offerings feature high-wattage models and boast high-tier certifications like 80+ Gold and Platinum, signaling their intent to establish a strong presence with premium products. Thermalright is currently offering its TR- series PSU lineups with models TB series being 80+ Bronze, TG being 80+ Gold certified PSUs on EU-230V certifications.

Thermalright TR-TB650S Specifications & Internals

TR-TB650S is 80+ Bronze certified 650W non-modular PSU featuring 100-240V universal input making it ideal for the same model to be retailed across the world. The power supply specifies 54.A on a single 12V Rail alone with 20A each maximum current on 5V and 3.3V rails while combined load on 5V and 3.3V shouldn’t exceed 100W. The PSU comes with tangle-free cables having single 24pin motherboard, 4+4pin CPU, 2x PCI-E 6+2pin5x SATA and 3x Molex connectors.

Thermalright TR-TB650S is a reliable and efficient power supply unit (PSU) that offers a solid balance of performance and value. With a 650W output, it provides ample power for most modern gaming systems, including those with mid-range to high-end graphics cards. Its 80+ Bronze certification ensures energy efficiency, reducing power consumption and lowering electricity bills compared to less efficient PSUs.

TR-TB650S features a non-modular design, which simplifies installation and cable management for some users. However, this can also make cable management more challenging in smaller cases compared to fully modular options. The PSU is equipped with standard safety features like over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, short-circuit, and under-voltage protection to safeguard your system. The 120mm fan is generally quiet during normal operation, minimizing noise distractions.

On the primary side TR-TB650S has Toshin Kogyo TK-LFW series 420V 330uF 2000Hrs Japanese capacitor rated at 105°C which follows the Arrheneous Equation for capacitor ageing for a normal running life of more than 150000 hrs. Secondary side capacitors are HuanYu ASiA’X TMX series 105°C capacitors rated at 1000Hrs. The PSU features a DC-DC design for 5V and 3.3V rails and hence follows a superior regulation and quality maintenance for the DC output.

Thermalright TR-TB650S Testing & Review

Once again, in our lab we put TR-TB650S to test across 50% as well as 100% and 110% loads. This time we have included cross-loading quality tests to study the interdependence and effect of the output rails on variety of loads. The results are expressed as below in the tables. Please keep in mind that this testing was done at 20°C room temperature. We didn’t open the PSU for the surface mounted temperature testing but used thermal camera instead for the rectifier temperature readings. We will be putting TR-TB650S under 3 primary testing procedures namely 80+ verification, regulation of 12V, 5V and 3.3V rails across various loading conditions and ripple characteristics of all the three rails. In this review we are including cross-loading tests to check the relative sensitivity of the output rails across different loads.

Putting the PSU straight to the test, we skipped the 20% loading and went straight for the 50% load where the efficiency of the PSU is at maximum. Due to fixed loading limitation of our PSU testbench, we applied 59.8% of load and observed that PSU exhibits impressive efficiency of 89.02% while at 102.2% load the efficiency was held at 87.2% on 12V rail alone. For the case of mixed loading, our testbench is limited to just the regulation and ripple characteristics because of the DC power meter connected only to the 12V rail, thus efficiency and power measurements are not possible. Hence, on cross-loading tests of max 12V load at 747W while combined load on 3.3V and 5V rails was 40W we found power supply to hold lowest ripple of 29.2mv on 12V rail, 21.35mV on 5V and 22.49mV peak-peak ripple which is quite impressive considering that this PSU is 80+ bronze certified and is cheapest among the other 650W 80+ bronze certified international brands at only 14,000 PKR. The table below contains two cross-loading tests which feature 12V rail on high load as well as 5V an 3.3V rails. While the second test has low load on 12V Rail while 5V and 3.3V rails on higher loads. We measured both the regulation voltages as well as the ripple on these two specific tests and found no anomalies.

    Greatly appreciate what y’all do here. Is it possible to expand into the territory of testing ATX PSU protections? Stuff like OTP, OCP, OPP, O/UVP, etc?

      Hi!
      This test system is homebrew for basic level of in-house quality testing of PSUs. We are acquiring Sunmoon SM8800 testbench and all of the quality parameter testing will be even better and we’ll expand to safety feature testing as well. Entering April we’ll be following up with putting even more information in our test results.
